Causes of Hearing Loss

Hearing loss can be caused by a number of factors and it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what’s causing your hearing loss. The most common causes of hearing loss include:

Aging (presbycusis)
Exposure to loud noise (such as loud music, occupational noise, or dangerously loud leisure activities)
Head injury or trauma
Perforated eardrum
Infection or illness (such as otitis media – an infection of the middle ear in which an accumulation of fluid may interfere with the movement of the eardrum and ossicles)

Malformation of the outer or inner ear
Meniere’s Disease
Ototoxic Medications
Tumors
Allergies
Poor eustachian tube function
Otosclerosis
Impacted earwax (buildup of earwax blocking the ear canal)
Autoimmune inner ear disease
