Hearing aids have come a long way in recent years. They are becoming more discreet, more powerful, and “smarter.” However, they still require some basic maintenance to keep them operating properly. Hearing aid batteries are an essential and ongoing purchase for hearing aid wearers.

Zinc-air button disposable batteries

While there are rechargeable hearing aid batteries on the market, most devices use a disposable zinc-air button battery. Zinc-air batteries come with a factory-sealed sticker which essentially allows them to remain dormant until the sticker is removed. Once the sticker is removed, oxygen interacts with the zinc, activating the battery for use.

For best performance, allow the battery to rest about a minute after the sticker is removed. Replacing the sticker after it has been removed will not deactivate the battery, so make sure you’re ready to use it once you take off the sticker. Once the battery has been activated, it will remain in an active state until the power has been drained.

Sizes of hearing aid batteries

The size of your hearing aid battery depends on the power needs of the device. For example, larger hearing aids typically require larger batteries. Hearing aids for people with more profound hearing losses often require larger, more powerful batteries.

There are four common sizes of hearing aid batteries on the market: sizes 10, 312, 13, and 675. The most common size is 312. All sizes of batteries are smaller than a dime, which can make them difficult to distinguish so manufacturers are required to use a uniform color-coding system. This makes finding and buying the right battery much easier.

Although different manufacturers may produce batteries with varying performance or longevity, battery dimensions are standardized within the industry. For instance, a size 312 battery across manufacturers should fit your device.

When purchasing hearing aid batteries, remember that color is key. You only need to look for your color – yellow, brown, orange, or blue.

Size 10 – yellow
Size 312 – brown (most common in the US)
Size 13 – orange
Size 675 – blue

Lifespan of hearing aid batteries

There are several factors that may affect the life expectancy of your hearing aid battery. Just like your cellphone battery, the more it is used, the more quickly it is depleted. Other factors that can affect the lifespan of the hearing aid battery may include the size, the weather, and the type of technology your hearing aid supports.

In general, the average lifespan of batteries is as follows:

Size 10 – three to seven days
Size 312 – three to 10 days
Size 13 – six to 14 days
Size 675 – nine to 20 days

Care of hearing aid batteries

When not in use, hearing aid batteries should be stored at room temperature. Refrigerating them is not recommended, as it could cause condensation to accumulate under the sticker which could reduce battery life. Storing them in heat could also shorten lifespan.

Keep unused batteries in the original packaging or in a battery folder. Do not store them loose in your bag or purse. If a battery comes into contact with coins or other metal, it could cause them to discharge or leak.
